17lbs cocaine found in executed man’s car
Investigations into last Saturday night’s shooting of 26-year-old Raphael Piggott have taken an interesting twist following the discovery of eight kilograms of cocaine concealed in the fuel tank of the vehicle that Piggott was driving at the time.
In a press release, police said that the fuel tank was adjusted to accommodate a compartment to stash the drug.
Initially, the police had found US$14,041 and 1,100 Euros in the vehicle at the scene of the incident, and these currencies have been taken into police custody.
The police said that they are now in the process of making efforts to locate Vincent Da Costa of Sixth Street, Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara, who was in the vehicle with Piggott at the time of the shooting.
Police are now convinced that the shooting may be related to the drugs and money later found in the vehicle.
Kaieteur News understands that the police had taken the car to the Turkeyen Police Station and were in receipt of information that drugs were stashed in the vehicle.
However, initial checks failed to unearth anything.
According to a source, the informant insisted that drugs were in the vehicle, and even warned that there may be an attempt to steal the vehicle from the station.
This prompted the police to take precautions and relocate the car to a more secure environment at their Eve Leary headquarters on Sunday night.
There, a thorough search was carried out, including deflating all the tyres, until investigators stumbled on a strange compartment on the fuel tank. When this was dismantled, the drug was found.
Piggott was shot and killed at Sixth Street, Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara on Saturday.
At the time, he was just about to turn his car around when he saw the gunman approaching.
Investigators believe that Piggott recognised the gunman and attempted to drive away when he was shot.
The car ended up crashing into a fence a few yards away.
Investigations are continuing.
