Parliamentary Secretary attached to the Ministry of Culture, Youth & Sport Steve Ninvalle declared open another Inter-Block event this time a limited overs cricket competition in Blairmont, West Coast Berbice last Sunday.
The event which will be played on a round-robin basis among the four settlements in Blairmont will be known as the Blairmont / Gerlander Inter-Block Cricket Competition which is being played at the Settlement Sports Club ground.
Teams competing in the competition are: Blairmont districts 1, 2, 3 and 4, Ithaca and Shieldstown which will field two teams apiece.
According to Organiser Hemchand Karamchand, the winning team will receive $20,000 and a trophy, while the runner-up pockets $10,000 and a trophy along with incentives for the most outstanding player in the tournament.
Karamchand speaking with Kaieteur Sport said that he would like to thank the Ministry for its support of sports in the community which has been lacking for sometime.
He added that because of the lack of sports equipment due to the prohibitive cost, organised form of recreation was missing in the communities, resulting in the youths having little or nothing to do after school.
Karamchand urged the Ministry to remain consistent in their support for sports not only in the Blairmont area, but the entire Berbice region.
It was also announced that an Inter-Block football tournament has been planned both at the senior and junior levels and this decision was made on the spot by Ninvalle after witnessing the turnout and enthusiasm shown by the youngsters most of them below the age of 14 years. They will also be engaged in cricket.
