Following the daring robbery on the GEB security vehicle which was transporting the Wales GuySuCo Estate payroll on Thursday last, Head of the Presidential Secretariat, Dr. Roger Luncheon, when questioned if the Government will now be working closely with the various banks in order to avoid the movement of cash in bulk, noted that one has to be very careful in introducing new interventions in cases where money is involved.
“I don’t want you to take my view as something binding… it’s important to the national economy, as such, that one has to be very careful, and one has to give good consideration in introducing interventions; making changes in the way things are done,” Dr. Luncheon told members of the media at the recent post Cabinet media briefing.
He added that he is not aware of any plan that would be unfolded that would see the implementation of the integrated financial management and accounting system, in order to allow for new interventions to be made relative to the movement of bulk cash.
Dr. Luncheon, who is the Chairman of the National Insurance Scheme, noted that GuySuCo has been fully collaborating with the NIS in making NIS contributions electronically, so that those paper submissions, with all the names from the estates, are being submitted in that manner.
He noted that this has significantly reduced the workload of the NIS and has eased the auditing and examination of the various submissions.
On Thursday last, the GEB security vehicle was transporting the Wales GuySuCo Estate payroll when, at around 11:00 hrs, a silver-grey motor car blocked its path in the vicinity of Stanleytown, West Bank Demerara.
Nine men then surrounded the GEB vehicle and held the occupants at gunpoint.
After relieving the security guards of two 12-gauge shotguns and a.38 pistol, the bandits made off with the GEB vehicle and the GuySuCo payroll.
Subsequently, all the bandits were caught, and the Joint Services recovered the $17.2 million payroll.
