Miss Republic of the Colin Elcock stable, ridden by jockey Rupert Ramnauth came through with a blistering finish to win the $250,000 first prize in the 1600m feature C class race at the Ryan Crawford Memorial Turf Club annual eight event horse race meet on Sunday last at their racetrack at Alness on the Corentyne Coast.
Miss Republic won from stablemate Delmur Gold ridden by Paul Delph in the Ansa Mc Al Trading Limited and Omai Transportation Service sponsored race.
It was a see saw battle as the race began with the Gap that and Annie’s Play Mate taking to the front early with Delmur Gold and Miss Republic running on home turf in hot pursuit. Delmur Gold then made its move for the front as the lead change hands constantly.
However as the race neared its conclusion and the horses headed for the home stretch, it was Miss Republic that started to make its move and nosed ahead, being pressed by stablemate Delmur Gold, to win a tight race. The Gap of the Customs racing stable came in third ahead of Annie’s Playmate of the Drepaul racing stable.
Sweet Romance of the Jagdeo stable ridden by Michael Semple was brutal and ran unchallenged, battering its opponents into submission to take the 2 yr old 1200m race and the $140,000 first prize in a devastating display of speed in the most convincing victory for the day.
The day’s proceedings started with Sacrifice of the Rumours racing stable and ridden by Ramnauth winning a close come from behind finish from Face De Music of the Elcock stable and stablemates Mattarazzi and Fire Power of the Jagdeo stables. The victory was worth $200,000 in the one mile event.
The G and H class 1200m gallop saw the Gap of the Customs racing stable winning from Gate to pole by about 7 lengths to take the first prize of $140,000 ahead of Alphabet who missed a few letters, Baby Boy and Shue Shuemi.
Miami Vice, ridden by owner Winston Appadu, squeezed past it opponents to win the ‘I class race from Cheyenne and Vanessa of the Crawford stable, to take the $90,000 first prize in the 1200m race.
The J and K race saw a win for Channel Boy of the Rumours racing stable ahead of Lenny O Halo and Blessed Child.
Fire maker burned up it opponents in the L and lower race which had a first prize of $60,000. Blessed Child finished second with Lenny O Halo third.
Ruffian of the McKenzie stable was the winner in the L2 1100m contest which had a first prize of $40,000.
The champion jockey was Rupert Ramnauth with three wins, with Krishna Singh being the runner up.
Jeff Mothoo of the Rumours racing stable was adjudged the top trainer with the Rumours stable winning the champion stable prize.
Over $2 million dollars in cash along with trophies were on offer, with some 60 horses taking to the starting line.
Popular sound system Rhythm Stars International was in attendance and added some spice to the Day’s proceedings and Turfites had a truly enjoyable day at the races. Which was well organised and incident free.
