Suspected killer remanded
Twenty-one-year-old Jermaine Savory, of 97 Second Street, Agricola, was yesterday remanded to prison on the charge of murdering Melissa Payne on the Agricola Public Road on November 5 last.
He made his first court appearance before acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson yesterday, and was not required to plead to the indictable offence.
The accused is expected to make his next court appearance on December 5.
Savoury was arrested at his Agricola home by the police, who where acting on information. According to a source, the suspect has admitted to being involved in the robbery, but has denied being the “trigger” man.
Savory claimed that his accomplice was the person who shot Payne, and the same alleged killer escaped with the money that they had robbed Payne of.
The 27-year-old woman was killed after she attempted to put up a fight with gunmen who carried out a brazen attack on her and a male friend at Agricola Public Road on Wednesday at about 8:30 am.
The gunmen escaped with some $110,000 in cash that was in Payne’s handbag. They also escaped with a quantity of gold jewellery.
The man said that they were approaching the public road when the Canter truck in which they were travelling encountered mechanical problems. He said that he emerged from the vehicle and attempted to fix the truck, but was later stopped by gun toting men.
He added that the gunmen demanded cash and jewellery from them. The male friend further told this newspaper that the bandits intensified their demands upon seeing Melissa’s handbag.
After seeing the bandits, Melissa attempted to run back to the truck, but was stopped by one of the bandits, who demanded her handbag.
The male friend said that she was giving them the bag when her hand got entangled with the strap of the bag.
The man said that this may have angered the bandits, who probably thought that she was not complying. The bandits fired a single gunshot at point blank range under her right arm.
She was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
News of her sudden demise sent shock waves among her family and community.
According to police sources, they have arrested two other persons in connection with the murder. Payne is expected to be laid to rest sometime in the coming week.
