Out of favor West Indies player Narsingh Deonarine returned to form with a classy even century yesterday to lead Mahendra Nagamootoo’s X1 to a five-wicket victory against Easun Crandon’s X1 at the Police ground in the second of three trial matches being used to select the Guyana team for the President’s Cup regional one-day tournament which starts in Guyana next week Thursday.
Twenty-eight-year-old Guyana one-day player Deon Ferrier hit nine fours and two sixes in a delightful 90-ball ball unbeaten 95 as Crandon’s X1 reached 236-8 off 50 overs on a slow track before the 25-year-old Deonarine, who has played four Tests and five ODIs, stroked the ball sweetly in his ton as Nagamootoo’s X1 reached 238-5 in 49 overs.
Watched by a small crowd which included Stanford Superstars Ramnaresh Sarwan, Travis Dowlin and Lennox Cush who arrived home on Tuesday evening and were allowed to miss Wednesday’s match, Deonarine and West Indies under-19 player Rajendra Chandrika (63) added 132 for the second wicket. This was after Chris Barnwell (2) was leg before to pacer Trevon Garraway at 4-1.
The partnership was broken when Chandrika, who hit seven fours and a six in his 87-ball 63, injured his ankle and was forced to retire hurt.
First-class left-hander Assad Fudadin, who became a father on Tuesday evening, joined Deonarine in their half-century partnership before he lofted West Indies under-19 left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul to long-off.
Ferrier removed Deonarine and Derwin Christian (6) to finish with 2-49 while Permaul, who got rid of Royston Crandon had 2-55, as former West Indies under-19 left-hander Gajanand Singh finished 15 not out to seal the victory with an over to spare. Jacobs conceded just 18 runs from 10 overs of impressive off-spin to follow-up his 4-27 in the first match.
Earlier, Shemroy Barrington (7) fell to Paul Wintz at 13-1 while Chris Barnwell removed Maxie De Jonge (23) and Devon Clements (21) in the space of two runs as Crandon’s X1 slipped to 67-3.
Guyana 20/20 player Orin Forde (6) was lbw to off-spinner Zaheer Mohamed and 2007 Guyana under-19 player Vishal Singh was bowled by Royston Crandon for a duck one run later to leave the score on 81-5 while Jacobs (10) hit a return catch to Crandon who finished with 2-49 to support Barnwell who had 3-31.
The final match is scheduled for the DCC ground from 09:15hrs today and the Guyana team should be announced before weekend.
Guyana who last won the title in 2006, play their first match in the President’s Cup series against the Combined Colleges and Campuses at the Guyana National Stadium.
