The People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) has expressed its sadness at the death of Mr. David de Caires, the Editor-in-Chief of the Stabroek News.
In a press release issued yesterday to the media, the Party conveyed its sincere condolences to the wife, children and other members of his immediate family.
“The PNCR wishes to reinforce the sentiments already expressed by the Leader of the Party, Robert Corbin, that Mr. de Caires was a pioneer in the expansion of the private media in the country and made a significant contribution to the legal and journalistic professionalism,” the release stated.
The party also noted that Mr. de Caires capitalised on the intention of the Desmond Hoyte Administration to expand the private media by launching the Stabroek News in 1986.
The opposition party said that Mr. de Caires will be remembered for his fierce commitment to press freedom and his robust stance when the PPP/C Administration withdrew advertising from his newspaper.
“He fought vigorously, both locally and internationally, until it was restored. David de Caires was a champion of press freedom not only for Guyana and the Caribbean but for the world,” the PNCR said.
According to the party, de Caires was the type of person who offered solutions to the deep-seated problems of Guyana and the rest of the Caribbean. The PNCR said that he was optimistic that despite the seeming intractability of the country’s problems, Guyana could overcome them and create a cohesive and harmonious society.
“It is well documented that as the Editor-in-Chief of the Stabroek News, he was a compassionate boss who was interested in the development of his reporters. In addition, he maintained a deep interest in the great events of our time and exhibited a lifelong love of all sports.”
Three years ago when the party had hosted a media luncheon, Mr David de Caires moved the vote of thanks on behalf of the media corps. The venue was the Water Chris Hotel.
