– declares: ‘I done with taxi work!’
“I done with taxi wuk!” was the heartfelt emotion of 29-year-old Kenrick Lawson, of 252 South Amelia’s Ward, Linden, yesterday as he lay in his bed at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation with several stab wounds about his body.
Lawson was repeatedly stabbed and left for dead, and his motor car, HB 4958, highjacked on Saturday night at Amelia’s Ward, Linden.
Recounting the incident yesterday, Lawson said that, at around 2:00hrs, he had just finished dropping off a passenger when he picked up two males.
He said the duo requested to go to a particular store quite some distance away. “I tell them that de wuk is $500.”
He said that the two agreed to the fare, adding that they spoke to him ‘very nice.’
He said that when they reached the location, the bandit that was seated at the back pulled out $1000 and proceeded to pay him.
Lawson said that when he took out his wallet to give them their change, the two bandits suddenly told him “gimme all ya f **ing money, and we want this f**ing car, too.”
Lawson said he immediately tried to pull the keys from the car.
“This is not de first time that bandits rob me and hijack meh car, so I know that if I tek out meh key they can’t drive away wid meh car.”
He, however, failed in his attempt to get his keys.
This move apparently angered the bandits who, Lawson related, then said: “Leh we kill this f**ing man, cuz he wan play he bad.” Lawson said that after he heard that, he started to run, but the bandits followed in hot pursuit.
He told this newspaper that he tried to hold the men at bay with a piece of wood, but he failed miserably.
The man said that, in the process of warding the men off, he fell and the bandits pounced on him and began to stab him to his neck and about his body.
Lawson said that the most remarkable thing was that a woman witnessed the entire incident but did nothing.
“I begged that lady to call the police and she just stand watching these men stab me,” he said with a teary eye.
The young driver said that, after inflicting several stab wounds on him, the bandits left, believing him to be dead since he had stopped moving.
“I play dead, so they go away with meh money and de car. After I saw that they had gone away, I struggled and got a taxi, who took me to the police station.”
He was then taken to the McKenzie Hospital, but was later transferred to the city, due to the severity of his injuries.
Lawson added that this is not the first time that he was robbed and his vehicle highjacked; and, as such, his family has pleaded with him to stop working late.
He, however, believes that the time has finally come to stop the regular taxi work, adding that he would be working strictly ferrying children to and from school.
