Satish Samaroo scored three tries and two conversions in the preliminary game for champions Hornets ‘A’ against their Hornets ‘B’ counterparts, then returned in the final to score one try and two conversions when the curtains came down on the Yamaha Caribs 16th Anniversary Sevens Rugby Competition at the National Park, yesterday.
The young rugby player was also commended for being the best tackler in the tournament. He was subsequently adjudged the Most Valuable Player (MVP) in the men’s category.
Careem Skeete, playing as a winger, scored four tries against the army and one against Hornets to be adjudged the Most Valuable Female Player.
The Pepsi Hornets ‘A’ team won the overall male title while the Yamaha Caribs duplicated that feat for the women.
President of the Guyana Rugby Football Union, Noel Adonis commended the winners and officials for a well run tournament. He praised the high level of competition of both males and females while noting that all of the participants had benefited immensely from the tournament.
Adonis said that it was clear that the Guyana Defence Force was lacking in experience. He said that the tournament was good for them as they managed to procure valuable experience for future tournaments.
“We have a good crop of sevens players and that is why we continue to dominate the Caribbean region,” Adonis reiterated.
The results of the day’s proceedings are: GDF defeated Hornets ‘B’ 22-5, Yamaha Caribs and Pepsi ‘A’ battled to a 7 all draw. Pepsi Hornets ‘A’ swamped Pepsi Hornets ‘B’ 40-0. The GDF won from Yamaha Caribs 15-7, Yamaha Caribs overwhelmed Pepsi Hornets ‘B’ 17-10 while Pepsi Hornets ‘A’ humiliated GDF 29-0.
