Bush fire damages tombs in Good Hope Cemetery
Hours after battling a blaze that destroyed a house at Non Pariel, fire fighters were again summoned to the East Coast of Demerara, this time to put out a fire that was raging through the Good Hope Cemetery.
The fire threatened several tombs and damaged a number of picket fences constructed around them.
While the fire is believed to have started spontaneously as a result of intense heat, one fire fighter believes that it was deliberately set.
He reasoned that, since there were some early morning showers, it would have been difficult for the grass to ignite without someone deliberately setting fire to it.
After almost an hour, the fire fighters managed to bring the blaze under control.
This is the second major brush fire on the East Coast of Demerara within a month, following one which had threatened several buildings at the Coldingen Industrial Site, including the GECOM office.
