Camptown, Alpha book last quarter-final slots By Franklin Wilson
Multi talented player, Richie Richards was the man with the golden boots, rescuing Sunburst Camptown for the second consecutive game when he hit in the lone goal of a keen fight against the struggling BV Triumph United in the final group of sixteen game of the 2008 Namilco Football Festival on Saturday night at the Tucville ground.
Saturday’s opening salvo saw Alpha United behind an Elton Brown double easing past Mahaica Determinators to seal a quarter-final date with Bakewell Buxton Stars on Wednesday night, the other quarter-final brings together Camptown and Bakewell Topp XX.
Camptown, though, can count themselves very lucky as BV squandered a host of chances, two of which went sailing over the cross bar from the six yard box. The Campbellville boys looked very flat on the night and struggled against a BV side that have not been at their best in the East Demerara league this season.
But Richards, who is also a goalkeeper with Camptown, was trusted again to take on the role of striker in crucial times and responded excellently like he did in his clubs final Cellink Premier League game against GDF, banging in the winning double after they were trailing 1-0.
And again he teamed up with regular striker Mervin Joseph who squared the ball for him to finish off in clinical fashion in the 63rd minute.
When the final whistle came and the score remained the same, the Camptown players must have been thanking their lucky stars for the win despite a poor game.
Alpha advanced to the second stage thanks to a first half double from Elton Brown who netted in the 4th and 37th. Determinators never looked that determined to pose a major threat to Guyana’s number one club.
The battle for semi-final spots commenced last evening when BK International Western Tigers opposed Pele and GFC tackled Fruta Conquerors.
The final two quarter-final matches will be played on Wednesday evening. Alpha face Bakewell Buxton, who knocked out defending champions GDF and are aiming for yet another upset.
The other match up brings together Camptown and Linden’s Bakewell Topp XX with the former having to lift their game against a young and determined Topp XX outfit if they are to advance.
