NEW AMSTERDAM, BERBICE – Last Friday evening, the Region Six CARIFESTA Committee hosted a function at State House in New Amsterdam to honour those who assisted in making CARIFESTA X a success.
The festival of arts was launched in New Amsterdam in June, and activities continued in several locations of the region until the final showdown on August 29.
Chairman of the Committee, Faizal Jaffarally, in acknowledging the contributions of the volunteers and other bodies, singled out entities such as the Kaieteur News, the Department of Education, and the National Communication Network.
Division ‘B’ of the Guyana Police Force, which was at that time headed by Assistant Commissioner Clinton Conway, was also given special mention. Certificates were handed out to a number of organizations and individuals.
Mr. Jaffarally recalled that when President Bharrat Jagdeo decided that Guyana would act as host country for CARIFESTA X, many had qualms as to whether it could have been accomplished, given the fact that there was only one year to plan the activity.
Another executive member of the regional committee, Shafiran Bhajan, explained that the festival, which was last hosted in Guyana 32 years ago, succeeded in bringing together several artistes in various art forms and showed a high level of performance and unity.
Region Six Chairman Zulfikar Mustapha indicated that Berbice has proven that it is capable of pulling off mega events.
