Oct 31, 2008 Letters
Dear Editor,
I wish to remark on Dr. Terrence Fullerton letter (SN dated Oct 30th, 2008) on the topic “Farmers can use any phosphate fertilizer; it does not have to be TSP”.
I wish to laud Dr. Terrence for his work in Improving Crop Production and Nutrient Management in the Caribbean and around the world.
I t is clearly shown that work has been going on in the laboratory and field as well. However, is this information available to the farmers in a comprehensible manner? This we have to ask ourselves.
In Dr. Terrence’s letter, he mentioned that “we discovered that rice farmers often apply fertilizers at the wrong time and in the wrong way”. This is very important news certainly to the farmers of Guyana. And I am sure that this information must be authenticated since it is published in the Farmers’ Magazine. It would be very good if the details can be available to the farmer so that the necessary adjustment can be done.
In the same letter Dr. Terrence mentioned that “We also found that in many areas there are additional nutrient problems that must be corrected, including low potassium, zinc and boron”.
Low potassium has always been reported as a problem both by farmers and other players in the industry.
However, Zinc and Boron deficiency is certainly a new area and cannot be recognised easily by the farmers without appropriate guidance. Therefore, I support your call for more research and demonstration in this regard.
The other area of concern is that since Zinc and Boron deficiency has been identified as a problem, is there any work for the formulation of specialty fertilizer for Zinc and Boron? It would be good if these nutrients can be blended in the regular NPK fertilizer so that there will be fewer burdens on the farmers.
