Oct 31, 2008 Letters
Dear Editor,
I thank you very much for publishing my letter (September 29, 2008) under the heading, Proposed Solutions To Impending Food Crisis of Guyana.
The real object of my letter, however, is to touch upon the issues surrounding the Cubana Monument, even though I feel that I should mention to you that the Guyanese public as well as the Farmers should be grateful that you had found space to publish my letter, since the content of my simple letter, could mean millions or even billions of dollars or Euros (etc) in aid to Guyana over a prolonged period as well as getting assistance towards soil conversion and land development from Brazil, and could greatly influence the prosperity of the nation.
If the issues are handled appropriately investment will be encouraged, both local and of a foreign nature, as in an indirect sense it does not merely cover the agro sector, but also covers the commercial and industrial sectors.
I do think that the site for the Cubana Monument, if there should be one put up at this time, is the most appropriate site, since it was the last place the UG and Korean students met, as well as others who lost their lives in the tragedy. There was a retreat there for a while where a fund raising activity had taken place for the students.
However, the Peeper was wrong in stating that there was never a Cubana Monument. there was one erected in the Le Repentir Cemetery along the main road at the street that runs from Princes St. to Sussex St., and the occasions of remembrance ceremonies were well attended by the Diplomatic Corp.
Maybe the Mayor attempted to divert attention from the atrocious state of the Le Repentir Cemetery by not mentioning the fact, as he was the person who declared it open being both the Prime Minister and the Minister of Works at the time, but it was however not considered to be officially open until L.F.S. Burnham did the honours; it even had a metal fence.
On the other hand, Minister Benn was one of the contractors who had built the monument and had promised to keep it in good report. I know that for a fact because I worked as an arc welder on the fence and even geared the monument on occasions, but I do not believe that that is the reason since he could always blame Mayor Hamilton Green for the state of the monument if there is still one existing or for the disappearance of it.
I do feel that it has to do with the proposed highway along the old Railway Line Embankment, and the fact that he may have spoken to the Minister of Housing to whom I had mentioned that the old Railway Line Embankment is ideal for the erection of inner city dwellings of three- to five-story apartment buildings and the sort of housing scheme buildings that one may see in London, Canada, even the United States and in Europe.
There are many examples of those sorts of structures in and around the city today. Even the proposed high voltage lines is not an appropriate excuse, since such can be ran underground, which in the long run would prove to be better, since such installations are easier to maintain and are safer.
Maybe the Minister is also aware that I had suggested that the area between Water St. and High St. on the Embankment be made a sand truck depot, with stock pile and all, and figures that the Mayor would agree with me as he was trying to get an alternative location to have sand trucks park, rather than on Lombard St.
Before I go, I will tell you something. Should I become the President of this country I would definitely ask Freddie to be a Minister of my Cabinet. Of course Freddie would have a choice as to which Ministry he would most be suited to. Having analysed all of the ministries of the PPP/C administration over the past 16 years and those of the PNC administrations over the period of their terms in office, Freddie would be in a much better position to choose a ministry to preside over.
Please do not get the wrong impression. Freddie was a friend of mine way back in his boyhood years, when the theme was advance to be recognised.
The thought occurred to me when reading his article “The rise and fall of Henry Jeffrey”. Now you may want to know, why or how it is that I may lay claim to such high office of the land as President of the nation.
Well look at it through the uncanny view. Mr. Hamilton Green may be thought of to be presidential material. However, he is Hammy. Dr. Cheddi Jagan Jr. may be thought of the same way but he is Joey.
The same may be thought of Robert Corbin, but he is called Corbin and Raphael Trotman is called Raphael. I am called Presi or President, which indicates that it’s possible to return to a true democracy.
