Playing with squibs proved very costly for a young driver, when two of the devices exploded in his car causing him to lose control of the vehicle which then toppled several times on Crown Street, Queenstown last night.
At first residents thought that it was a drive-by shooting, having heard two explosions before a loud crash when the car almost slammed into an electricity pole.
Only one of the three occupants was slightly injured, while the car, a Toyota Corolla Station Wagon, sustained damage to both its interior and exterior, the former caused by the exploding device.
According to reports, the occupants of the car are claiming that someone threw the explosive devices into the vehicle causing the driver to panic when the devices exploded.
However, there are suggestions that it was the occupants of the car who were playing with the explosives.
A resident of the area stated that except for the car there was no one on the road when the explosions occurred.
This newspaper observed at least two squibs and a box of matches in the overturned vehicle.
The driver of the car is a popular up and coming motorcycle racer.
Police were summoned to the scene and took statements from the driver and the occupants of the vehicle as well as some nearby residents.
