Odo Peters was adjudged the Rodeo King when the Rising Sun Rodeo Committee held a successful one day Rodeo at the Rising Sun Turf Club, West Coast Berbice last Sunday. It was a day filled with fun as many spectators were left bewildered and in awe at the displays on offer.
The event had its fair share of spills and trills as the Vaqueros displayed their skills in some daring and breadth taking sequences.
NASTY TUMBLE!!! This rider landed awkwardly after the steer he was riding became extremely uncooperative.
In the end three Cowboys came away with two wins each. Peters’ victories came in the Calf roping event, which he won from Clive Ross. He was also successful in the Bare Back Bronco event ahead of Clive Winter and Ryan Alsides third.
Carl Davis also had two victories, with wins in the Steer Roping competition ahead of Cuthbert Andrews and Marcel Anderson. Davis was also victorious in the Bull riding competition ahead of Clive Winter and Ryan Alsides.
Marcel Anderson also had two victories he won the Barrel race, he then teamed up with Keino Hardcourt to take the Wild Cow milking competition ahead of Clive Ross and Clive Winter, with Jermain Ross and Trevor Ramsey coming in third.
The event which was attended by a wide cross section of spectators was rated the best so far by many who attended. Nine events were run off, among them were Wild cow milking, where the participants (a pair) had to rope, restrain and milk the animal within a period of two minutes. The participant with the most milk won.
The Calf roping competition saw the Vaquero on horse back being required, to rope a calf around the neck dismount the horse, secure three feet of the calf by tying it, stand and raise their hand in the air to indicate that they are done, the persons with the fastest time won.
Steer roping, which was similar to the Calf roping, was also a crowd pleaser. Many riders were displaced by the raging animals and some patrons escaped serious injuries as the wild animals charged into fences forcing the spectators, who had perched to get a better view, to beat a hasty retreat.
The vaqueros, included females, were from Brazilians, Venezuelans and the interior regions of Rupununi and Lethem along with the locals from West and East Berbice.
The Tug O war event was won by the visiting vaqueros as they triumphed against their local counterparts in a fierce competition, which lasted all but 10 minutes.
Prizes ranged from $25,000 to $5,000 and also included trophies, and other incentives, were presented to the outstanding performers.
The organising committee was headed by Inshanally Habibullah and included Fazal Habibullah, Johnny and Jules Fredricks, Donald and Zaleena Lawrie.
The event was the fifth of its kind. The first such event was held some 20 years ago. This is the fourth successive year that the event was held.
The day’s event was incident free and was sponsored by Banks DIH Limited and Chester Fried Chicken of Bush Lot, West Coast Berbice.
