The parents of 15-year-old Amrita Layne are pleading for her safe return home, after she left for school on Wednesday and never returned home.
According to the teen’s mother, Dhanmattie Mohabir, of 32 Sea Road, Golden Fleece, Essequibo Coast, on Wednesday last she found that $3,000 was missing from her purse, along with some of her daughter’s clothing, but she did not take it seriously, and only realised what was happening when she observed that her daughter had not returned home from school.
She explained that after night fell and she still did not see the teen returning home, she immediately launched a search for her. The mother said that the girl’s friends told her that Amrita was walking home from school when she told them that she had to go to the pharmacy to purchase some pills for her mother.
However, the mother also found out that the teen was seen crossing the Essequibo River in a boat headed for Parika, on the East Bank of Essequibo.
On Thursday, the day after the teen had disappeared, Mohabir said that she received a telephone call from her daughter, stating that she was in Vreed-en-Hoop with a ‘boy’ and that she would return home on Sunday.
The mother said that that was all her daughter would tell her before hanging up the phone.
However, on Sunday, the teen did not return home.
According to the mother, a friend of the teenager would pass on messages to the parents, and this friend informed them that Layne would be leaving Guyana for Suriname some time soon.
The worried mother noted that the friend, who refused to reveal her identity, is in constant contact with her daughter.
The woman said that this is not the first time that the teen has run away from home. In October of last year, Layne ran away from home after she was caught stealing a cell phone from the church that she attends.
At that time, she had sought refuge at her grandmother’s house in Berbice, the mother said.
This time around, it appears as if the teen has run away from home for a similar incident, as it has been reported that she is once again involved in another cell phone incident at her Johanna Cecilia Community High School.
The teen’s parents are pleading with her to return home, since she has nothing to be afraid of. The mother noted that she is deeply worried about the safety of her daughter, and only wants what’s best for her.
