A keen contest is anticipated when the country’s top scrabble players converge this morning at the Court’s Sports Club, Main Street, Georgetown for the Open Diwali Competition, sponsored by the Guyana Association of Scrabble Players(GASP).
Among the top males vying for the coveted first place are Leon Belony, Fred Collins, James Krakowsky and Ulric Harris.
They can expect a tough challenge from the females Grace Hercules, Ruby Collins and Abigail McDonald among others.
Despite holding the prestigious title of national champion, Fred Collins will be hard pressed to overcome this strong line up especially when one notes the high level of play witnessed in recent tournaments.
Belony has recently etched his name on the Metro Lien trophy and then came back to earn a second place in the just concluded GASP Open Championships.
Collins will also have to be circumspect of McDonald who, despite a lengthy hiatus from the game, rebounded to comfortably cart off the GASP Open Championships.
Hercules was devastating in the GASP Handicap tournament and defeated a star-studded lineup inclusive of Collins. She will also have her eyes riveted on the top prize.
Moen Gafoor, another noteworthy player will also be sticking up his finger for a credible place in the tournament. An ever-improving player, Gafoor can pose a serious threat to the best player in the sport on his day.
When all of these variables are examined it becomes quite a daunting task to select a winner. Word formation time is 10:00hrs sharp.
