After Mavericks go down by 134 runs in semi-final in Berbice
Heartened by the interest and crowd support shown for the historic Inter-County cricket final between Berbice and Demerara under flood lights at the Guyana National Stadium earlier this month, the Guyana cricket Board (GCB) has decided to play the Neal and Massy National 40-overs first division final at the Stadium on Friday under lights.
Berbice champions Young Warriors will battle Georgetown zone winners DCC in the first ever club final under lights in Guyana after making 247-7 and bowling out Mavericks for 109 in their rain hit national semi-final at Blairmont in West Bank Berbice yesterday.
Former West Indies under-19 batsman Gajanand Singh stroked a fluent 73 and shared in a 123-run third wicket partnership with national under-19 player Seon Hetmyer (46) after rain had stopped play with the home team in early trouble on 9-2.
Singh, who made his first-class debut this year, batted enterprisingly and hit three fours and four sixes in his 73 while Hetmyer, the only Guyanese centurion in this year’s regional under-19 series in Barbados, reached the boundary thrice in his solid 46 to repair the early damage on a slow track.
Former Guyana under-15 player Balram Samaroo (36*) and Paul Wintz (33) contributed towards the end of the Young Warriors’ innings against a Mavericks attack which lacked potency.
Samaroo and pacer Kwasie Maltay struck early blows and the match seemed to be heading for an early finish with Mavericks wobbling on the ropes at 27-5. But the 47-year-old Rabindranauth Seeram, who scored three centuries from 41 first class matches, added 46 with Amir Khan (10) for the sixth wicket to give the West Demerara side some hope of an upset victory and a place in the final.
However, once Seeram, a present Guyana selector, departed, former West Indies under-19 opener Richard Ramdeen (3-23) cleaned up the tail with his left-arm spin and got support from 52-year-old Guyana under-19 Coach Huburn Evans (2-20) who scored three fifties in nine first-class matches in his younger days.
Samaroo enjoyed a good day at the office with 4-8 from eight overs of off-spin to help his team into Friday’s Day/Night match at Guyana’s premier cricket venue from 15:00hrs.
