The cries of several motorists, and even pedestrians, to have the bridges along Cemetery Road repaired have been answered by the Ministry of Public Works.
The bridges, which have been in a state of disrepair for some time now, have been a cause for concern, since it was thought that no effort would be made to rehabilitate them unless someone was hurt as a result of their deplorable state.
Up to yesterday, workers were engaged in works to complete a final bridge along the thoroughfare.
According to Minister of Public Works, Robeson Benn, while historically the bridges were the responsibility of the municipality, his ministry has decided to take up that task since it also is charged with maintaining Cemetery Road.
Minister Benn pointed out that he has mandated officials of his ministry to ensure that, once the bridges are in need of rehabilitation, they are attended to forthwith.
And according to the minister, although the bridges are being rehabilitated with wood, plans will be streamlined in the future for them to be asphalt-surfaced.
He noted that at the moment his ministry’s budget does not have the required finances to improve the material quality of the bridges.
Additionally, he revealed, his ministry is currently undertaking the rehabilitation of another bridge at Ann’s Grove, which was also in a deplorable state.
Meanwhile, the municipality, according to City Mayor Hamilton Green, some years ago saw the need for the bridges to be constructed of concrete, a task which he noted was undertaken on the bridges eastwards of the bridges currently being rehabilitated.
Mayor Green explained that by constructing the bridges of concrete, their structures will be more durable over time.
According to Mayor Green, the ministry, with its financial capacity, should have also been able to facilitate the construction of concrete structures, which would be more appreciated by motorists that traverse the Cemetery Road route.
