Police are probing an armed robbery that occurred at about 21:00 hrs on Friday at Kuru Kururu, along the Soesdyke/Linden Highway, during which the driver and passengers of a motor bus travelling to Lethem were attacked and robbed by eight gun-toting men.
In a release, the police said that the bus, driven by Dhanram Singh and carrying nine passengers — five Brazilians, two Surinamese and two Guyanese — had departed from the P &A Bus Service Office at Church Street.
The vehicle was travelling along the Soesdyke/Linden Highway when the driver observed that the occupants of two cars were following the bus, and flashing their lights in a signal for the bus driver to stop.
The driver, Dhanram Singh, became suspicious and tried to outrun the vehicles, but the occupants began shooting at the bus and eventually punctured the right rear wheel, forcing the vehicle to stop.
Dhanram Singh was hit twice in his upper back, while Brazilian national Barbara Ferreira Dos Reis was hit to her right thumb.
The two cars that were following came up alongside the bus, and eight men, all armed with shotguns and handguns, came out and took the driver and passengers out. They then robbed them of cash, jewellery, clothing, cell phones and travel documents and escaped.
Two spent 12-gauge shotgun cartridges and a warhead have been recovered at the scene by the police, as the investigations continue.
And at about 11:30 hours yesterday, the skeletal remains of a human being were found under a tree at Seven Miles, Mahdia, with a bag containing clothing nearby.
The remains, which are suspected to be those of a male of African descent, is at the Mahdia Hospital Mortuary. Efforts are being made to transport the remains to Georgetown for a post mortem examination.
