TSC to meet Everest in final after beating GCC in semis despite Sookdeo’s century
Transport Sports Club overcame the mental stress of having to bat three innings against GCC in their Hand-in-Hand Georgetown zone second division 50-overs cricket semi-final to eventually win by two wickets yesterday at Everest and advance to meet Everest in the zone final.
After their semi-final was originally washed out after their innings last week, TSC were already celebrating victory yesterday with two balls remaining when it was discovered that the two scorers had different totals resulting in the Thomas Lands unit being asked to begin their innings for a third time in the game requiring three to win from two balls.
Travis Giddings, who finished unbeaten on 25 and Stefan Sampson (11*) then ensured their team advance to the City final with their match saving unfinished 36-run ninth wicket stand.
GCC, led by his fourth century in two weeks from 17-year-old national under-19 left-handed opener Jeetendra Sookdeo and a half-century from Gavin Singh, fell for 253 in 49.5 overs as Steven Alves took 4-52 and Shawn Massiah had 2-45.
TSC then reached 254-8 off 50 overs in the drama-filled finish as Travis Blyden top scored with 45.
Sookdeo struck nine fours in his 113-ball 119 to follow up his under-19 century the day before against GYO and along with Singh, who thumped three fours in his 66-ball 53, added 139 for the third wicket to set the Bourda Boys on course for a 250 plus total on a slow track.
Marc Nicholson (27) and Massiah (26) offered vital contributions in the middle order before the ninth wicket pair eventually took the game away from GCC.
