Police have released the army lieutenant who was nabbed on Wednesday night with a grenade and more than 100 rounds of 9mm ammunition in his car.
A police official confirmed that the rank was released on Thursday and that the grenade and ammunition were handed over to the army.
The official also said that police are unlikely to lay charges against the lieutenant.
However, the mother of the lieutenant’s 16-year-old girlfriend told Kaieteur News yesterday that an army official who interviewed her on Thursday indicated that the rank may be court-martialled.
The lieutenant is said to be a member of the army’s Joint Services Operating Group (JSOG).
It is alleged that the 26-year-old lieutenant turned up at the woman’s Anira Street residence with his arsenal, at around 22:45 hrs on Wednesday, after his girlfriend had walked out of his Sophia home.
According to the teen’s mother, the officer has repeatedly made threats to ‘blow up’ her property when quarrelling with her daughter.
She has reported the threats at the Alberttown Police Station; but, according to the woman, the rank was not arrested.
According to the woman, her daughter turned up at her home, at around 19:00 hrs on Wednesday night, after the officer had assaulted her and issued threats about bombing the mother’s Anira Street house.
According to the woman, her daughter went to the lieutenant, who told her he wanted her to return to Sophia. She said that her daughter returned to the house and began to pack a bag with the intention of going with her boyfriend.
The woman said that while the rank was standing in the yard, a neighbour observed that he had a grenade in his hand. The neighbour then contacted the police.
Meanwhile, the lieutenant went to his car where he waited for the teen to come.
However, the police arrived and took him into custody at the Brickdam Police Station, after confiscating the grenade and ammunition.
Kaieteur News understands that the soldier was detained at the Brickdam Police Station.
The teen was also questioned but has refused to offer any incriminating evidence against the rank.
