Leading local cyclists Alonzo Greaves and Tyrone Hamilton will fly the Golden Arrowhead at the National Lotteries Authority 8th Elite Caribbean Cycling Championship tomorrow and Monday in St Vincent and the Grenadines.
Greaves has been in red hot form for the longest while winning a number of races and finishing in the top three in the few others he has not won, while Hamilton has been his closest threat in the past few months.
The Guyana Cycling Federation had shortlisted six riders, but due to the lack of funding were able to only send two of the six. The others who were named were Robin Persaud, John Charles, Lear Nunes and Junior Niles.
Assisting the Federation with cash donations were a number of cycling enthusiasts among them businessman and veteran cyclist Shameer Baksh, Steven Edwards and Raymond Perez.
Greaves and Hamilton will be competing against riders from 26 countries including the host in the time trial tomorrow morning over a distance of 24 miles and the road race on Monday, which will be 75 miles.
In 2004 Marlon ‘Fishy’ Williams was crowned champion with Greaves placing fourth and the Guyanese are aiming to win the race again to underline their dominance in the region where our juniors are the best.
The other countries participating are St Lucia, Barbados, Grenada, Antigua, Tortola, St Croix, St Martin, Martinique, Guadeloupe, French Guiana, Suriname, Dominica, Haiti, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Anguilla, Belize, St Kitts, Montserrat, Curacao, Jamaica, Bermuda, Bahamas and Aruba.
