DDL holds to tradition
– Ansa McAl sponsors Veterans segment
By Rawle Welch
Holding distinctly to its long tradition as one of the forerunners in support for sports, Demerara Distillers Ltd (DDL) under the Diamond Mineral Water brand pledged another year of sponsorship to the Guyana Hockey Board’s (GHB) Annual International Indoor Tournament during a launching ceremony held yesterday, at the GCC Pavilion.
In attendance were DDL Marketing Assistant Alana Johnson, Past President of the GHB Phillip Fernandes, who is the tournament coordinator, GHB committee member Tricia Fiedtkou and its Secretary Gregory Sills.
Johnson in her remarks said that they were extremely pleased to once again be associated with the Festival, while reminding that their support to the event is now in its fifth year.
“The fact that we are here for the fifth year is indicative of our satisfaction with the way in which this tournament has been organised and run by the GHB,” Johnson expressed.
She added that because Diamond Mineral Water is a product of the highest quality and the choice of champions, they thought it fitting to associate the brand with a tournament that is usually well-organised and of the highest quality as well.
“DDL and Diamond Mineral Water know the importance of having our athletes involved in competitions at the highest level so this is our reason for the continued support of the tournament.”
She stated that the Company eagerly awaits the commencement of yet another Festival, the confirmation of existing champions and the birth of new ones.
Fernandes in his presentation spoke of the tournament’s success over the past five years and one which to date still attracts the widest cross section of teams in the region.
He disclosed that the GHB is indeed happy to have DDL once again on board and equally delighted to be associated with the Company.
“Our Gold sponsor DDL has been a great partner of hockey and we’ve truly enjoyed working with them since the event’s inception through their Diamond Mineral water brand. We appreciate their continued support to hockey and attribute a large degree of our success to their perseverance,” Fernandes pointed out.
The veterans’ tournament which was introduced in 2006 is another feature that adds quality to the competition and this segment is being sponsored by Ansa McAl under its Carib Beer brand.
Fernandes extended thanks to the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport for making the venue available, adding that they’ve really improved the facility and brought it up to an acceptable level which he referred to as praiseworthy.
The Guyana Olympic Association and the Guyana Police Force also came in for high praise for their support with helping to host the opening ceremony and providing security respectively.
The media also came in for special mention.
Meanwhile, teams form Trinidad and Tobago, USA and Canada have confirmed participation so far, while a team from Jamaica has expressed interest, but is yet to confirm.
