With just one day left before the expected greatest basketball entertainment show this year, the Wildfire Production team is observing for the first time in the event’s history, a problem–free Supligen All–star Weekend.
Speaking to Kaieteur Sport yesterday, Wildfire member, Warren ‘Neskie’ Williams said that an unprecedented trend emerged in the organisation of this year’s event with his team being able to plan without problems.
“Preparations are good and everything is intact; coaches are working hard, guest players will be here and for the first time ever, we have no problems since we were able to iron out those early,” an ecstatic Williams informed.
Defending slam dunk champion, Trinidad and Tobago’s Steven ‘Lighter’ Lewis along with Miguel Williams are expected to join the Linden and Georgetown respectively senior All–star teams on Saturday after arriving today.
Williams said that because of last year’s hype, Lewis made it clear to the management of the event that he was willing to return this year. The high flying Trinidadian is expected to take on the local clan in the slam dunk contest.
In addition, the All–star weekend will also feature a three–point shooting competition where defending champion, Stephon Gillis will look to extend his reign at the top of that department of local basketball.
Dubbed the ‘Staff Party’, the Supligen–sponsored event will have the best local talents on show in dunking, dribbling, shooting in a party atmosphere that is likely to create a ‘Madison Square Garden’ basketball experience.
It’s all about bragging rights and up to yesterday, the four teams were hard at work, fine tuning their skills for the ‘gala’. Both Georgetown and Linden has signalled an intention to continue practice sessions down to the wire.
Another interesting fact is that the more seasoned coaches will be given a rest this year as Linden’s Claude Williams and Raphael Damon will lead the junior and senior All–star teams respectively for the first time in their careers.
Williams coaches the Glands Trucking Service Bulls while Damon is head coach of the current national first division champions, Wismar Pistons.
Former Caribbean Basketball Confederation All–star, Lugard Mohan will lead the senior Georgetown team while Mark Agard takes charge of the juniors. It’s also the first All– star coaching exposure for both ex–national players.
A press conference is to be held today where the overseas–based players will be on hand to field questions and in addition, Banks DIH will make its contribution of the 2008 event sometime around 2:00pm at Thirst Park.
