Julian Smith was reduced to tears yesterday morning after some gunmen robbed a minibus in which he was a passenger.
Speaking outside the Ruimveldt Police Station where he had gone to file a report, Smith said that he boarded a Grove-bound bus in the vicinity of Stabroek Market to go to the Demerara Harbour Bridge.
He said that two men who were in the bus waited until the bus had reached Eccles to announce that they wanted to disembark at a location called “The Barber Shop”. It turned out that the Barber Shop is at Bagotstown.
Smith said that when the bus stopped at about 09:45 hours, one of the men who had a haversack in front of him, pulled out a gun and proceeded to rob everyone on the bus. He said that they took his rings and other accessories and some $200,000 in cash, which he had on his person.
He said that the gunmen, all of whom were very young, also relieved the bus conductor of whatever monies he had and the other passengers of what they could get, before fleeing into Bagotstown.
He said that if he should see the men he would be able to recognize them again.
Smith headed to the Ruimveldt Police Station and as he was on the road outside the station, he saw the two men passing in a car and heading back to the city.
Immediately a police patrol left in search of the men but up to news time there were no reports of any arrest.
Smith said that what really hurt is the fact that he has to work hard for whatever he earns and that the gunmen were younger than some of his children.
