The second phase of the Unserved Area Electrification Programme (UAEP) is set to commence within another two weeks time, according to Chief Executive Officer of Guyana Power and Light, Bharat Dindyal.
During a recent press conference, Dindyal, when asked about the current state of play with the programme, noted that materials have already begun arriving in the country. However, there are some minor setbacks with the commencement of the programme, the CEO said. This, he pointed out, has to do with the pole supply.
According to Dindyal, currently the pole supplies are affected by the limitations and restrictions at the crossing at the Linden Bridge. He, however, noted that they are hoping to find a way to work around that issue.
In the meantime, Dindyal said that $10,000 which the consumers are required to pay for the meters can be done in part payments.
He pointed out that this was agreed to during the first phase and it would be extended to the second phase. This, he said, was agreed to since people complained of having to find that sum of money at one time.
In addition, it is more necessary during the second phase since the areas which will be targeted during the second phase are more vulnerable.
Communities in Regions Two, Three, Four, Five, Six, Seven and Ten are expected to benefit from the second phase of the electrification programme. Some of the communities include Old Suddie (Onderneeming Sand Pit Essequibo Coast),
Wine Bush, Leonora, Lusignan East, Novar Mahaicony, Fyrish, St John Settlement, Port Mourant, Byderabo (Bartica), West Indian Association Scheme, Amelia Ward Phase 1 and 11.
In the meantime, the utility company is mainstreaming several public relation workshops aimed at sensitising members of the communities to benefits of the works which will be ongoing. Meanwhile, the first phase of the Unserved Area Electrification Programme was successfully completed back in December of 2006.
