Some fourteen teams from five communities situated on the East Bank Demerara are contesting Upper East Bank Inter-Block Football Competition which opened Sunday, at the Timehri Red ground.
The competition, which is being organised by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport has been an overwhelming success in the thirteen communities that have participated so far and Parliamentary Secretary attached to the Ministry Steve Ninvalle told Kaieteur Sport that the response has even surprised them given the fact that this is the introductory phase.
“The response so far has really surprised us and this have made us even more determined to plan better for next year since we at the Ministry intend to assist with the development of the sport across Guyana,” Ninvalle informed.
Ninvalle added that Sports Minster Dr. Frank Anthony and the Director of Sport Neil Kumar are extremely pleased with the organisation and support the event has received and this is despite the lack of assistance from the local governing Body.
He referred to the recently concluded Plaisance tournament as a huge success and is certainly the benchmark that other communities can strive to emulate.
The teams participating are: (Group A)- Airport, Hyde Park, Hill Top, Ice House Road, Docks Area, Barama and Kaimans, while Group B will have Soesdyke North and South, Kuru- Kururu Back and Front, Yarrakabra Warriors, Kuru-Kuru Lions and Calabash Alley.
Facilitator of the tournament Sherlock Hudson received a quantity of footballs to give to the respective teams from Ninvalle. The final is set for November 11.
Meanwhile, National Sports Commission Football Coach Dennis ‘Chow’ Hunte recently returned from another coaching stint in Region 9 where he conducted sessions with aspiring footballers.
Hunte, who has paid visits to Lethem, New Opportunity Corps, Mahdia and Linden, will be visiting Mabaruma shortly to help prepare a team to contest the upcoming Kashif & Shanghai Tournament.
The team will be making a re-entry into the competition after a four-year absence and according to Ninvalle because the Ministry is fully responsible for their inclusion, they feel duty-bound to present the best possible unit to represent the Region.
“The K&S tournament even though it is invitational still has some of the best teams in the country battling for supremacy and it is on this premise we would like to present a team that can hold their own against the best,” Ninvalle pointed out.
He added that because of the vastness of the region, it has always posed a difficult task for them to play as a team so the Ministry thought it best to provide someone with the technical skills to go into the community and choose the best possible players. Region 9 made their last appearance in 2004.
