The National Diwali Committee has changed the name of the Miss Diwali Pageant to the Miss Guyana Sari pageant, following vehement protests by Hindu activists.
The 11 delegates in the newly named contest were formally introduced last evening at the Le Meridien Pegasus hotel, where the chairman, Mr Pradeep Samtani, announced the name change of the pageant.
Hindu activists had argued that to name a pageant “Miss Diwali” violates the sanctity of the Hindu Festival of Lights and the Goddess Laxshmi after whom the pageant is named.
This composite shows the eleven delegates who will vie for the crown and the grand prize of a motor car this Saturday at the National Park, Georgetown.
