Improved discipline could reduce road accident rates – PM
…Dr. Edwin Carrington, PNCR express condolences to family of dead journalist
Improved discipline on the roadways could reduce accident rates, loss of lives, injuries, pain and grief, loss of equipment and money, Prime Minister Samuel Hinds said yesterday.
The Prime Minister made the statement while offering condolences to the family and friends of Akila Jacobs, the reporter who died following a smash-up in Linden on Saturday.
Jacobs was killed when the bus in which she was travelling slammed into the back of a sand truck. The bus driver also died, and other media practitioners were injured. Yesterday, the Prime Minister said that Jacobs had been with him on a number of assignments.
“When we look in the Ministry of Works, some time ago, and had some comparison done in accidents in Guyana compared to the United States, on some measures, the experts said that Guyana’s accident rates were some 50 times higher that in the USA.”
At present, what has been happening is that drivers are moving into the realm that their speed is determined by the type of road they are driving on, he said.
Head of the Caricom Secretariat, Dr. Edwin Carrington, said yesterday that he has noted with great distress the untimely death of Jacobs and the varying degrees of injury suffered by others while on assignment.
Throughout the Caribbean Community and beyond, he noted, the secretariat staff, along with himself, has been working closely with the media on public information, education and development.
“Given that Guyana is the headquarters of the Community, the home of the CARICOM Secretariat, my own interaction with the media in Guyana is considerable and regular. As a result, this tragedy is extremely and personally painful,” Dr. Carrington said.
He offered his sympathy to the family and friends of Jacobs, and a wish of speedy recovery to those injured.
The People’s National Congress Reform said that it is deeply saddened at the news of the death of the NCN television journalist.
“The PNCR wishes to offer its profound sympathy to the bereaved families of the deceased. Akila will be specially remembered at our press conferences for her pleasant and engaging personality. At the same time, we pray that those injured in the accident will achieve full and complete recovery from their injuries.”
While it is true that words cannot really dispel the pain and anguish which the families of the victims must feel at this time, the PNC noted, they should remember in these dark times that ‘faith in God keeps hope alive.’
