Over the next week, Guyanese in the eastern part of the country will benefit from free medical attention, as a team of 23 medical practitioners arrived yesterday to render assistance.
The visit is made possible by collaborative efforts of the Organisation for Social Advancement for Guyana and the Caribbean Medical Mission Association of New Jersey.
Throughout the week, the team will be at Port Mourant Hospital, the New Amsterdam Clinic, Bush Lot Health Centre, Williamsburg Health Centre, Number 53 Village Health Centre, Skeldon Hospital, and the Mibicuri Health Centre, Black Bush Polder.
The team of doctors includes General Surgeons Theophilus Lewis and Lennox Alves, and Dr. Ronald Bailey, an Orthopaedic Surgeon.
Family practitioner Dr. Berman Saulders told Kaieteur News that the mission is aimed at treating a least 5,000 persons.
“We brought a vast amount of medication, some of which can be accessed here that cost thousands of US dollars through monies from fundraisers in the USA,” he said.
Dr. Saulders said that the team will effect general surgeries for the abdominal cavity and hernia, and hopes that persons in need of those will turn up in their numbers.
The Organization for Social and Health Advancement in Guyana (OSHAG) is a service-driven non-profit organization based in Brooklyn, New York and represents a partnership between members, local voluntary organizations and individuals in the extended community, specifically in the areas of Cancer and HIV/AIDS.
On Friday, the team will host a medical outreach at the Campbellville Health Centre, Georgetown.
