Everest, GCC advance in city ZoneBy Sean Devers
Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) defeated Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) and Everest beat GNIC respectively yesterday to advance to the next round of the Georgetown zone of the Hand-in-Hand Demerara Cricket Board (DCB) 50-overs knock-out second division cricket competition.
At Malteenoes, a fighting 55 from Collis Butts failed to prevent GNIC from a 46-run loss to Everest. Butts, the son of former Test off-spinner Clyde Butts, added 54 for the sixth wicket with Clive Grimmond (26) as GNIC fell for 155 in 41.1 overs replying the Everest’s 210 all out in 44.5 overs.
Forty-six year-old David Harper, who scored two fifties in his eight first-class matches for Guyana, opened the bowling with his off-spin and took 3-26 while UWI left-arm spinner Raymond Singh (3-26) and West Indies under-15 leg-spinner Amir Khan (2-14) supported with the ball for Everest.
In Everest’s innings, Harper who played for Guyana between 1987 and 1991, top scored with 36 before he was run out while Skipper Surendra Herilall (26) and Singh (24) supported as Butts grabbed 3-41 and Orlando Fraser and David Rajmangal took two wickets each.
At DCC, the hosts lost by 77 runs to GCC after falling for 145 in 42 overs replying to the 222-7 off 50 overs made by GCC.
National under-17 selectee Delon Fernandes led the way with 54 for GCC while Guyana-born Australian Romaine Grenville (40*), national under-19 left-hander Jeetendra Sookdeo (32) and Elon Fernandes (32) offered support for GCC as Guyana under-19 player Trevon Griffith took 3-34.
Griffith returned to stroke 45 while Jamal Hinkson made 35 in a losing effort for DCC as Ray Ramkissoon snatched 4-28 and Waslim Haslim took 3-5. Everest will face defending City champions Malteenoes today in a key match at Malteenoes.
