Pooran’s double century highlights first roundEssequibo middle order batsman Navishaul Pooran hit a fine double century as his team Zeelandia defeated Maria’s Pleasure by 222 runs as the Busta 40 overs cricket competition commenced in Wakenaam last Sunday with two matches.
Host Zeelandia won the toss and took fist strike and piled up 430 for 8 off their allotted 40 overs. Pooran, who benefitted from an early chance when on 18, was severe on anything loose and completely dominated a 2nd wicket partnership of 150 with Ajay Ghansham who made 79 (6×6, 5×4).
The right handed Pooran whose wicket was the last to fall for Zeelandia, made 208 which contained ten sixes and eleven fours. Ricardo Adams also contributed 30 towards the end.
Medium pacer Leonard Lewis was the leading wicket taker for Maria’s Pleasure with 4 – 46 while Emmanuel Lewis also picked 2 – 48.
In reply the visitors lost 2 early wickets, but Kennard Lewis who made 108 and Bernard Lewis with 21, then repaired the early damaged with a 3rd wicket stand of 155 which gave Maria’s Pleasure some hope. After the former was caught on the long – on boundry in the 20th over for a well played century which was decorated with eight sixes and ten fours, no other batsman showed any sort of resistance as Maria’s Pleasure lost their last six wickets for 40 runs and were eventually bowled out for 208 in 32 overs.
