As a means of reaching out to persons living with cancer, the Periwinkle Club, a support group, will establish a counseling service before the end of this year.
The club will receive funding from the Association of Guyanese Nurses and Affiliated Health Professionals from the United Kingdom.
Secretary of the Club, Dr. Wallis Plummer told Kaieteur News that the club will not be able to provide 24-hour counseling, but would be working along the line of taking appointments.
She explained that the club does not have trained counselors, but this will soon be rectified.
According to Dr. Plummer, the establishment of the counseling service is being viewed as an activity of top priority. She said that this kind of support is limited in the society at large, and in the prevailing environment of ignorance about the disease and its management, many persons are left bewildered and confused by the myths and misconceptions concerning their health.
The Club sees the establishment of a counseling service to benefit club members and the community as an important public service for all cancer patients and their relatives.
Currently, the club has 25 active members with at least 18 of them being cancer survivors.
This group was formed in 2006 solely for the purpose of providing a forum for survivors of breast and cervical cancer to meet, share experiences, negotiate services as a group and to educate the public about the disease and the risk factors.
The club has since expanded its focus to include all cancers and has concentrated its efforts on information sharing and counseling of patients assessing cancer diagnosis and treatment at the Georgetown Public Hospital.
The club also subsidizes the cost of diagnostic tests and medical treatment for patients who are members of the club.
Meanwhile, it was also noted that the group will be hosting its primary fund-raising event – a dinner, fashion show and Dutch auction on November 1 at the Cheddi Jagan Research Centre (Red House).
Since Guyana is observing Breast Awareness Month, the club will be involved in distributing some patient care items to cancer patients at the Georgetown Hospital sometime this month.
