– Health Minister
Health Minister Dr. Leslie Ramsammy has revealed that almost all products containing melamine have been removed from the local markets.
In an invited comment to this newspaper, Minister Ramsammy said that the ministry’s only concern at this time is that small vendors may still have some of the products in their possession.
However, he noted that it is now the vendors’ sole duty to think about the health risks associated with the products if they are sold to consumers.
Minister Ramsammy noted that most importers of products that are laced with melamine have voluntarily come forward and informed the ministry that the products are in their possession.
Melamine is a toxic chemical that can cause kidney stones and kidney-related illnesses. In this regard, when questioned if the increased number of kidney problems that are being highlighted may be as a result of Guyanese exposure to melamine, Minister Ramsammy said that is not the case.
He noted that, so far, the ministry has not had any reports of melamine-related illnesses from the various hospitals.
He is, nevertheless, urging persons to be on the alert and to carefully check all products made in China before use.
As it relates to the two unregistered importers who have illegally shipped the ‘Milky evaporated milk’ in Guyana, Minister Ramsammy said that the ministry can impose charges against the importers if it chooses, since they were not operating within the boundaries of the law. He, however, added that charges would not be instituted, since the Analyst Food and Drug Department needs the assistance of the importers in locating where and to whom the products were sold.
