Potential buyer to present proposal – Mayor Green
Vendors at the Kitty Market are optimistic that the City Council would one day engage restorative work on the municipal facility, in order to give them a better and safer place from which to operate.
For more than two years, the market has been in a deplorable state, and there were reports from officials at the municipality that plans were being streamlined to have the facility rehabilitated, even as reports were being circulated that the Council was hoping to have it privatised.
According to an official close to the municipality, plans were apace for the market to be overhauled for Carifesta X, but for some reason, nothing was done.
Several months ago, workers descended on the market place, setting up a scaffold and giving vendors the impression that restorative works were about to begin. But, according to the vendors, the workers just lingered around the market for a few weeks, then subsequently left, leaving in place the scaffolds.
Reports are that the vendors who are forced to operate inside the dreadful atmosphere of the market are subjected to getting wet whenever it rains, since the roof leaks, as does the floor of the upper flat, which has deteriorated over the years.
Up to yesterday, the scaffolds set up outside of the market remained intact even as the continuance of the weakening process of the market was evident.
City Mayor Hamilton Green, in an invited comment yesterday, disclosed that the Council had attempted to commence work on the facility, but was restricted by the lack of funds.
As a result, he said, the Council has been advertising for assistance to have the market restored, either through a joint venture or outright sale.
He revealed that it was only recently that the Investment and the Development Committees of the Council were expected to meet with two responders to the adverts.
According to him, one of the responders is expected to present the Council with a detailed proposal of his intentions for the facility within a fortnight.
Mayor Green disclosed that the responder is expected to provide funding to restore the facility, but will be allowed control of it only if he assures that the architectural design is retained and the community is given continued access.
