As the clock tolls away the hours in the run-up to his middleweight clash with Andrew ‘Sixhead’ Lewis on October 25, Howard ‘The Battersea Bomber’ Eastman has waged a spiritual battle against the ex-champ, predicting that he will come out victorious.
Eastman, who has dominated the European boxing scene and fought two epic bouts with world champions, William Joppy and Bernard ‘The Executioner’ Hopkins, now embraces a Rastafarian ideology and plans to engage ‘Kadamar’ (the spiritual being worshipped by Rastafarians), in his quest to return to the top of his game.
“I man bringing on a spiritual itation and Selassie flag got to fly; His Majesty has to prevail,” Eastman prophesied when asked to make a prediction. He said that he has great respect for Lewis because he had brought home Guyana’s first world title. “But I only fear His Majesty’s works,” Eastman pronounced.
The former European champion said that he had done most of his heavy training in his hometown Berbice, but broke camp after Lewis had sustained an injury, forcing the promoter to postpone the bout.
Eastman will be involved in several rounds of sparring starting at around 10:00hrs this morning at the FYF Boxing Gym. ‘The Battersea Bomber’ has also intimated that he will spar at least three days in the new week before wrapping up sparring sessions.
Elaborating on his spiritual approach Eastman said, “Jah give I and I the talent and I and I will continue to chant Selassie name during I and I training sessions.” He said that he was born to fight and has been doing so ever since he was 6 years old. Pressed to make a prediction Eastman eventually conceded, “If I man predict a victory for Jah, obviously I and I am predicting a victory for Jah son, which is I and I.”
Eastman began his professional career in 1994, defeating the best fighters coming out of Europe. In his first fight in North America he erred badly, losing a majority decision to William Joppy in a fight that was there for the taking. His next outing in America, against Bernard Hopkins, was a loop-sided affair with Hopkins winning the middleweight encounter.
‘Sixhead’, on the other hand, rose to prominence after thrashing James Page en-route to becoming Guyana’s first world champion. His first defence against Larry Marks ended in an uninspiring decision victory for the champ. A clash of heads resulted in the second defense against Ricardo Mayorga ending in a stalemate. The return bout ended in a seventh round knockout for the Nicaraguan.
Both Lewis and Eastman have intimated that this fight is of immense importance since it is the launching pad to return to the international arena. Both fighters are extreme fanatics in terms of physical fitness and even though both possess wiry physiques, they each pack a tremendous wallop. Eastman has knocked out 85% of his opponents, has a rock jaw, and is a technically sound boxer.
Lewis, on the other hand, has had three hectic encounters with ‘Deadly’ Denny Dalton. The first ended in a no contest after a clash of heads while Lewis decided to quit on his stool in the second fight. He later returned in the third meeting to pound out a unanimous decision over Dalton.
But Eastman is no Dalton and while Dalton is a rough and tumble proposition, Eastman is more wont to employ the finer art of the sport. Fans will be anxiously observing ‘Sixhead’s’ approach to the unorthodox tactics employed by Eastman.
Meanwhile, former Secretary of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control(GBBC), Trevor Arno, revealed that after a meeting with officials of the GBBC last Thursday, the promoter has received permission to go ahead with plans for the card.
However, there has been one change to the card. Pamela London, originally scheduled to match gloves with Veronica Blackman informed that she is ill and cannot keep her ring date. Promoter Lumumba scoffed at this excuse saying that it is apparent that London is scared of Blackman after she had a taste of Blackman’s power in their last encounter. Lumumba said that London is still to produce a medical document to substantiate her claim.
Blackman will now face Lindener Sharon Warde in a fight that promises just as much since Warde herself has been engaged in several bruising encounters in the past. In the other bout on the card, American based Guyanese Elton Dharry will oppose Orlan Rogers in what is expected to be a sizzler, as both principals are attacking fighters. Fight time is 20:00hrs sharp.
