Yesterday marked five years since Guyana’s former First Lady, Mrs. Viola Burnham, died.
Mrs. Burnham was remembered yesterday by a simple floral tribute at the home she once occupied at D’Urban Backlands.
She was fondly referred to as a colleague, an advocate, and someone who fought for what she believed in.
Among those present at yesterday’s ceremony was PNCR General Secretary Oscar Clarke, who noted that Viola Burnham threw herself into the political arena and developed several ideas. She was to become a “giant” of a woman. He added that she was very resourceful during the “difficult times,” she fought for equality among women, and was in the forefront of the party. The PNCR is forever indebted to her for the service she has rendered, Mr Clarke said.
Mrs Burnham succumbed to cancer, having survived an earlier attack. Her children had her body cremated in Florida, and the ashes were brought to Guyana.
