– ‘I wanted to be with my family’
Nadiram Alli, a Pomeroon resident, was yesterday given an alternative of paying a $20,000 fine or serve 12 months in prison after he was recently deported from Texas.
Alli, who made his appearance yesterday at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, departed Guyana by sea at a port which is not authorized for such departure on August 7. He pleaded guilty.
Alli told the court that he is a 42-year-old businessman of Taymouth Manor, Essequibo Coast.
He said that on August 7 he left the Pomeroon, headed to Venezuela, then to Mexico and into Texas. The man said it was while at the Texas border that he was caught by immigration officials. He was subsequently deported and handed over to local immigration officials.
When asked why he went to that extreme to leave the country, Alli said that he applied to the American Embassy twice for a visa, once in 2006 and as recently as last January. On both occasions he was denied.
The man added that his wife and child live in the United States and he really wanted to be with them so he resorted to leaving Guyana illegally.
