DEAR EDITOR,
As a Guyanese who has witnessed some of the struggles and the progress this country has made over the years, I support the government’s commitment to the development of this country.
It is my opinion that as Guyanese we should support the present or any future government who represents us as a Guyanese Nation i.e. a government who sees us as Guyanese and not by our differences in colour.
I admire the courage of the President and all other political leaders who are willing to be tasked with governing this country because of the minimal financial resources available to them for the grand task which lies ahead.
The labour sector is one of major concern to me. Some Guyanese have countless excuses for their poverty but the same ones are willing to hold two or three jobs in other countries in order to meet the standard of living in that country.
I heard the President make a comment at the 10th anniversary of the Kaieteur News: “people should stop making excuses and get up and get.” I support his comment.
Anyone observing will see ongoing development. Many new businesses are being erected, most of which are owned by non-Guyanese.
People from other countries are migrating to Guyana to work and have a better standard of living, which they accomplish and still provide financial support to their family members at home. The same resources and opportunities are available to our people but what are we doing with them?
Guyanese should understand that no government is going to put food on our table but rather they will create opportunities for us which will enable us to provide for our families.
We should learn to be innovative and our choices will determine the type of lifestyle we can afford ourselves. We shouldn’t be hypocritical.
Our criticisms should be constructive and our way of thinking should be independent and not through others.
We need to start identifying ourselves as Guyanese and not Black and Indian. The world recognises us as Guyanese. There is no segregation in their eyes for us so why do we insist on this casual reference in our own country?
As an independent nation, we should be ashamed to ask for assistance from the same people we fought for our independence.
Are we really independent if we are seeking assistance from our former rulers for help for anything and everything?
We celebrate holidays in recognition of our independence from the inhumane treatment our fore parents endured.
We reflect on the struggles of the late Mr. L.F.S Burnham and Dr. Cheddi Jagan to cause our independence.
Whenever we celebrate our independence anniversary, as a nation, let’s think and act in the true meaning of nationhood so that Guyana and its people would be respected worldwide.
Roy J. Singh
Please share this to every Guyanese including your house cats.
