– magistrate places siblings into protective custody
An East Coast Demerara magistrate has ordered the Welfare Department to take possession of the children of a Bare Roots couple after they reportedly admitted that they cannot effective care for them.
The couple was charged with ill-treatment of a child, a charge that stemmed from the shackling of their 14-year-old daughter.
The couple pleaded not guilty to the charge, which was read to them by Magistrate Sherdel Issacs-Marcus at the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court.
They were both released on self bail.
During the hearing, the mother of the children related to the court that she was forced to leave the children unattended while she sought work in the sugar industry.
It is alleged that while she is at work, her reputed husband would sexually molest her 14-year-old daughter.
On several occasions the abused child attempted to run away, but this led to her mother shackling her with a chain and padlock.
The matter was exposed by concerned neighbours, who contacted the police and the Ministry of Human Services’ Welfare Department.
The 14-year-old was immediately placed into protective custody, while her four siblings were taken away yesterday.
Meanwhile, the police are still probing allegations that the 14-year-old was sexually molested.
The teen had told this newspaper that her stepfather was in the habit of sexually molesting her.
The man was arrested immediately after the allegation was made.
