Leon Belony swept aside a star-studded lineup of scrabble players, including James Krakowsky and Colin Chichester, to inscribe his name on the Metro Lien trophy when the Guyana Association of Scrabble Players (GASP) staged that tournament at the Malteenoes Sports Club, Sunday last.
In his first game, Belony registered four bingos against Michael Benjamin, eventually winning by a massive 275. He faltered against national champion, Fred Collins in the second set, losing by a spread of 97 but subsequently made amends for that loss with a decisive win against Wakefield Skeete (119) just before the lunch interval.
The in-form Belony continued his winning ways after lunch, disposing of Colin Chichester by a spread of 25. He then finished up with wins over R.O. Michael (119) and Moen Gafoor (22) to finish on 5 games and a positive spread of 473.
The players will once again be in action on Sunday at the Malteenoes Sports Club when the GASP open championships get underway.
