– 200 cyclists of all ages join the Georgetown Bike-A-Thon Georgetown, Guyana: Digicel, the leading mobile telecommunications provider in Guyana, held a Bike-A-Thon, at 10 locations simultaneously across Guyana, to observe Caribbean Wellness and Fitness Month.
In Georgetown, the Bike- A -Thon attracted over two hundred cyclists from all ages and walks of life; wearing their red ‘Fitness through Cycling’ T-shirts, provided by Digicel, they invited passing cyclists to join in the Bike- A -Thon along the route as they rode.
Those attracted, included two six year old riders, one of whom, Shamar Ferry, completed the entire route. The contingent which consisted of mostly young people was quite enthusiastic.
The Bike-A-Thon adds to the observance of Wellness Month which focuses on encouraging citizens to engage in activities that will promote and sustain healthy lifestyles, and in so doing help lower the levels of lifestyle-related diseases.
Digicel Guyana Sales and Distribution Director, Kalpesh Joshi, who himself participated in the ride from beginning to end, said “the Bike-A-Thon was geared towards promoting healthy lifestyles among families. It’s an alternative to regular rigorous exercising but much more fun.”
He also said that “I felt a sense of fulfilment from being involved in the Bike-A-Thon and cycling through the streets of Georgetown,” adding that “my body felt much better than when I started the ride.”
Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports Director of Sports, Neil Kumar, was present for the start of the Georgetown Bike-A-Thon. In Georgetown, the cycling fun started on Sheriff Street at the Digicel Cellular Planet store and passed through the Campbellville, Ruimveldt, Wortmanville, Stabroek, Lacytown and Bourda communities and ended at the Digicel Store at Regent and Light Streets.
Other locations where the Bike-A-Thon was held included East Coast Demerara, West Coast Demerara, New Amsterdam, Linden, Mabaruma, Kwakwani, and Santa Rosa. The Digicel ‘Fitness through Cycling Bike-A-Thon was cosponsored by Aqua Mist.
