Two ranks of the Guyana Defence Force escaped unhurt when the fiberglass boat they were traveling sank in rough waters en route to Makouria. The incident occurred at around 09:30 hours on Wednesday last.
According to information received by this newspaper, Private De Costa and Private Clarke, the pilot of the vessel, were transporting 10 sacks of cement from Bartica in the GDF boat which was powered by an 80 horsepower outboard engine.
They encountered difficulties in rough waters which resulted in the boat capsizing. Both soldiers were forced to swim to safety.
A team of divers were subsequently deployed to the area and managed to recover the vessel and engine.
Fortunately there was no significant damage to the vessel or the engine.
