Abena Williams, 27, of Farm, East Bank Demerara, and a 15-year-old female were granted $40,000 bail after they appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle yesterday on a robbery charge.
The two, who were allegedly armed with an ice pick, reportedly relieved Latchman Singh of one cell phone and three gold rings valued at $85,000. They were represented by Attorney–at-Law Adrian Thompson. Both accused pleaded not guilty.
Thompson told the court that his clients were drinking in close proximity to Demico House and that Singh assumed that the defendants were prostitutes.
Thompson said that his clients and the virtual complainant immediately had a verbal exchange. The lawyer expressed amazement that Singh is now claiming that he was robbed by the defendants.
In a bail application, the lawyer told the court that his clients are both young women, with unblemished records.
The matter is to reconvene on November 4.
And in the said court a 14-year-old from Essequibo was remanded into police custody after he appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle for allegedly being in possession of cocaine on September 15.
The teen allegedly had in his possession five and a quarter grams of the illicit substance.
Attorney- at-Law Patrice Henry, who described his client as a third form student, noted that the boy had been incarcerated since Monday.
Police Prosecutor Denise Griffith said that drugs were found in the defendant’s crotch during a search of a minibus.
The matter was transferred to the Charity Magistrate’s Court for September 22.
