– was picking fruits from neighbour’s tree
Friends of a 12-year-old boy barely managed to drag him to safety last Thursday after he was attacked by a pit bull while picking fruits from a neighbour’s yard in Grove Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara.
Tashawn Griffith was picking guavas from a limb hanging over a neighbour’s fence when the animal clambered over the concrete structure and bit him on the left leg.
Fortunately, he was rescued and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where he has been admitted. His condition is listed as stable.
According to reports, Griffith and several boys were standing outside the yard while picking guavas from the overhanging limbs, when some of the boys observed the dog, which is penned in the same area, coming towards them. Kaieteur News understands that the lads ran away, but Griffith returned and began picking the fruit again.
The agitated animal somehow clambered up a limb and sprang over the fence.
It then sprang on the boy, biting him at least twice behind the left leg.
A resident said that a passerby stoned the dog, which let go after being struck, and Griffith’s friends managed to pull him to safety.
The couple who owns the animal was out when the incident occurred.
Contacted yesterday, one of the owners told Kaieteur News that she keeps the pit bull as protection, since she lives in proximity to a community that is a haven for robbers.
The woman said that she has since placed barbed wire at the top of her fence to prevent the animal from clambering over.
But she alleged that Griffith and other boys sometimes throw stones at her fence and this agitates her dog.
She confirmed that a disagreement has arisen between her and Griffith’s grandmother over compensation.
The pit bull owner explained that she had given Griffith’s grandmother $3,000 after the woman indicated that she needed money to purchase pajamas and vests for the hospitalized lad.
However, she said that the relative then gave her back the cash, which she indicated was inadequate.
According to the woman, she is willing to provide assistance to the injured boy, although she believes that he was at fault.
“I asked her what compensation she was looking for but she can’t tell me,” she alleged.
