Lethem brushed aside St. Ignatius 2-0 to win the 2008 Ministry of Sport, Central Rupununi Heritage Month football competition played at the St. Ignatius ground in Region Nine yesterday.
Steve Lamazon and Shane Williams blasted in goals in the 78th and 88th minutes respectively to land the more experienced Lethem team the victory. The contest was witnessed by Parliament Secretary in the Ministry of Sport Steve Ninvalle, who is in Lethem.
Ninvalle along with Coach Dennis ‘Chow’ Hunte, who has been conducting training sessions for players, male and female, in the area, travelled to Region 9 last week to promote the ministry’s grassroots football initiative. Their programme also tied in with Amerindian Heritage month celebrations.
Ninvalle on behalf of the ministry presented footballs, football nets, cricket gear and trophies to the community for development in the respective disciplines and several activities planned.
