The potential for ethanol production within Canje Creek was on Thursday highlighted to residents at Barakara Creek, Berbice, as the Ministry of Agriculture extends its ‘Grow More Food’ campaign to hinterland communities.
Minister of Agriculture, Robert Persaud, told residents that the ‘Canje Basin’ is one of the prospective areas in Guyana for the cultivation of suitable crops for the production of ethanol (biofuels). This area has about 50,000 hectares of land available.
Concerns were raised by residents about the lack of support within the community from the agriculture sector.
However, Minister Persaud assured them of increased efforts by his Ministry to provide technical assistance and other support to further develop agriculture within the Canje Creek.
Barakara Creek is located 50 miles up the Canje Creek, and agriculture is the main activity that sustains the livelihood of villagers. A quantity of seeds, planting materials and literature on agriculture was distributed.
The Regional Chairman, Zulfikar Mustapha and a team of technical and regional officers accompanied the Minister.
