The older brother of the 14-year-old lad initially taken into custody following the murder of 13-year-old Kavita Panday has been charged with committing the heinous crime.
The schoolgirl was beaten, raped and left to drown in a canal near her Bath Settlement, West Coast Berbice home.
The 17-year-old accused, who is a neighbour of the slain girl, appeared at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court yesterday before Magistrate Chandra Sohan.
On account of his age, Magistrate Sohan remanded him into the custody of the police. He is to return to court on September 16.
Kavita Panday, of Lot 122 Block ‘D,’ Bath Settlement, was discovered partly submerged in a canal near her home at around 14:00 hrs on Tuesday.
Her underwear and tights were below her knees, and the left side of her face was swollen. The left side of her abdomen was also badly bruised.
An autopsy revealed that Panday sustained multiple injuries and died from drowning. It also showed that she was sexually assaulted.
The autopsy indicated that Panday was struck with a blunt object, which left a large bruise by one of her temples.
Her eyes were also swollen, while there was a bruise on one of her hips and other bruises on her privates.
In addition, there was muddy water in her stomach and a foreign object in her wind-pipe.
Reports indicate that the victim was last seen in the company of a teenage neighbour while heading into the Panday family farm.
Police had initially arrested the suspect’s 14-year-old brother, who is said to be known by the same name as his older sibling.
